The GenNext Giving Circles are an innovative way of giving that allows Ottawa’s young philanthropists to engage with the local issues that matter most to them, decide where their funds are going, and experience the local impact of their gift.
With a trailer full of tools, signage and parts in tow, Right Bike’s head mechanic Doug cycles across the city to offer free bicycle tune-ups, repairs and education sessions to members of the community who need it most. A bonus for Doug: while helping others, he’s also strengthening the future for himself.
Right Bike is a social enterprise that offers training and supportive employment to people living with mental health and other challenges who may face other barriers to getting a job. Part of the Causeway Group of Social Businesses, Right Bike started in 2011 and has grown exponentially to help dozens of people in 12 Ottawa neighbourhoods.
The GenNext Social Enterprise Giving Circle supports organizations like Causeway to improve employability for people who have had trouble finding a job due to circumstances beyond their control.
“Working for Right Bike has had a tremendous impact on my self-confidence. I’m now entertaining some very good job prospects.” – Doug
With Right Bike, Doug trains and oversees other mechanics and works directly with members of the community, which has boosted his confidence, given him valuable communication and management skills, and set him up for future employment beyond Right Bike.
As a social business, Right Bike is able to make a big difference – for both the people it employs, and for those who access its services in the community. Doug and the Right Bike team spend part of their time giving free tune-ups and bike repair training in neighbourhoods with limited access to these kinds of resources, as well as connecting with groups such as refugee kids who are new to Ottawa and families living on tight incomes.
By investing in programs and initiatives that provide people with opportunities to thrive, we help build a stronger community for everyone.
