For Sam, Camp Ten Oaks is so much more than a summer camp. It’s a place where he can build friendships, and develop leadership skills in a safe and supportive environment.
United Way partner Camp Ten Oaks is the first of its kind in Canada – a week long sleep-away camp for kids and teens in the LGBTQ+ community. The camp provides a safe space for campers where their differences are not only accepted but celebrated. For many campers, the camp marks a cornerstone of their year.
Sam, who is now 16, has been attending the camp for five years and has seen first-hand the magic of Camp Ten Oaks. Coming from a family with two gay dads and three lesbian mothers, Sam’s family structure is not always understood and accepted. At Camp Ten Oaks however, Sam has found complete support from fellow counselors and campers who understand where Sam is coming from.
Although this year marks Sam’s last year at camp, he will carry forward lifelong friendships, leadership skills and self-confidence.
Camp Ten Oaks first opened its doors to campers in 2005 and quickly reached max capacity with 84 campers. United Way is proud to support programs like Camp Ten Oaks that help kids be all that they can be – your donation to United Way will ensure more kids like Sam have the chance to experience the magic of Camp Ten Oaks.
